The original Danno dies

James MacArthur, who played Danno in the original "Hawaii Five-O," died yesterday in Florida. He was 72.

MacArthur, the son of actress Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, died of "natural causes," according to his agent, but no specific cause of death was given.

The blond, curly haired MacArthur co-starred opposite Jack Lord for 12 years in "Hawaii Five-O," a popular cop series that aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980 and was shot on location. MacArthur left the show in 1979.

Its famous tagline, "Book 'em, Danno," was uttered by Lord's character, Det. Steve McGarrett, in nearly every episode.

CBS revived the show this season, again shooting in Hawaii and keeping the old show's classic opening theme music. MacArthur had agreed to appear on the revamped version, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

MacArthur dropped out of Harvard in his sophomore year to pursue an acting career. He appeared in several Disney movies (including "Swiss Family Robinson") but got his big break on "Hawaii Five-O."

He also was busy with stage work, including playing the lead role of Hildy Johnson in a California production of "The Front Page" -- which was co-written by his father (with Ben Hecht) in the 1920s.
