Usain Bolt wants to play for Manchester United (seriously)

Since Usain Bolt gained world-wide fame for being ridiculously fast at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he's been able to mix in visits to his favorite club, Manchester United , his other favorite club, Real Madrid , and more between running ridiculously fast. In the past, he's talked about playing as a " left-sided defensive midfielder " when he was in high school, but now he's seriously talking about his future as a footballer and not just his past. Says the 24-year-old in his autobiography : "Ideally, if I was to play football, I'd sign for my favorite team -- Manchester United. People say it's not realistic but nobody has seen me play so you never know. If Alex Ferguson saw me in one of those charity matches he might think I could replace Ryan Giggs ." You might laugh at that last sentence, but considering Sir Alex just bought a player for £7 million sight unseen , picking the next Ryan Giggs out of a charity match could be pos...

Troy Polamalu's long locks insured for $1 million

You'd think that an All-Pro safety who missed 11 games in 2009 due to a knee injury would be most concerned about other body parts, but Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Troy Polamalu (notes) also has endorsements to consider. One of his endorsements is with the Head & Shoulders company, which makes sense when you consider Polamalu's famed three-foot-long hair. It's a tribute to his Samoan heritage, and it's not something he plans to cut anytime soon. [ Photos : More images of Polamalu ] Once in a great while, a Steelers opponent will try to use Polamalu's hair against him in a game (as Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson (notes) did in 2006 as Polamalu returned an interception), and it's quite possible that the concern over such matters was the catalyst needed by Head & Shoulders to insure Polamalu's hair with Lloyd's of London for $1 million , which was reported by the Associated Press. Then again, it could be a public...

Making Soldiers Fit to Fight, Without the Situps

Anne McQuary for The New York Times Soldiers at Fort Jackson, like Pvt. Alyssa Leggat, work on push-ups. The fitness regime involves more agility and balance training. FORT JACKSON, S.C. — Dawn breaks at this, the Army’s largest training post, with the reliable sound of fresh recruits marching to their morning exercise . But these days, something looks different. Anne McQuary for The New York Times It’s 5:30 on a recent morning, and basic training is in progress at Fort Jackson, S.C. A new exercise regimen is “more whole body,” a platoon leader says. That familiar standby, the situp, is gone, or almost gone. Exercises that look like pilates or yoga routines are in. And the traditional bane of the new private, the long run, has been downgraded. This is the Army’s new physical-training program, which has been rolled out this year at its five basic training posts that handle 145,000 recruits a year. Nearly a...

She looks no older than 13 - one of dozens of girls parading the street looking for clients in the blazing mid-afternoon sun. Most come from the surrounding favelas - or slums. Clemie asks for less than $5 (£3) for her services. An older woman standing nearby steps in and introduces herself as Clemie's mother. “I usually have more than 10 clients per night - they pay 10 reais ...

Anger in Hong Kong Over Manila Siege

Vincent Yu/Associated Press Thousands of people marched through a downtown street in Hong Kong on Sunday in honor of the victims of a bus hijacking in the Philippines. Woman forced back into prostitution

Migrants at the bottom of the economic pile have been particularly hard hit by the global recession. The worst of this job is not the sex. The worst now is the sensation of failure Elsa Elsa, a 28-year-old Brazilian, was a victim of people trafficking, but managed to escape. Now, the downturn has pushed her back into prostitution. After leaving Goiania, in the heart of Brazil, for Madrid in Spain, freeing herself from an illegal prostitution ring and finding work as a manicurist, the lack of money left her without many options. As a result, she went back to prostitution. "It wasn't my choice, it was the only way to survive," she explains. As an illegal immigrant in Europe, Elsa, arrived in Spain in 2005 with the help of a criminal gang, knowing that she would work as a prostitute. However, what she did not know was that her working conditions would be a form of slavery, that she would be guarded for 24 hours a da...
