Monfils beats Gasquet to reach US Open quarters

NEW YORK (AP)— Gael Monfils beat countryman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 Monday to give France its first U.S. Open quarterfinalist in a decade. The 17th-seeded Monfils had never advanced past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament other than the French Open. He reached the semifinals there in 2008. Gasquet, ranked 38th, upset sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. The former top-10 player missed more than two months last year after testing positive for cocaine. He successfully appealed, saying the drug inadvertently entered his system when he kissed a woman at a nightclub. This was his first fourth-round match at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2008. Gasquet had a chance to serve out the third set at 5-3, but Monfils broke back. He ended the match with his 14th ac

V.Williams, Peer cross paths again; American wins

NEW YORK (AP)—When Israel’s Shahar Peer was denied a visa to play in the United Arab Emirates last year, Venus Williams spoke out on her behalf—because she felt it was the right thing to do under those circumstances. When Peer and Williams meet on a tennis court, as they’ve done rather frequently lately, the American shows not a trace of empathy—because that is the right thing to do under those circumstances. The No. 3-seeded Williams got through a tougher-than-expected test and beat the 16th-seeded Peer 7-6 (3), 6-3 Sunday to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the 10th time. It was their sixth head-to-match, fourth this year alone, and Williams has won every time in straight sets. <!-- SCBT --> <script> document.write("<scr"+"ipt language='JavaScript1.1' src=\"http://ad-emea.doubleclick.net/adj/N4022.N4022.Yahoo.mcfr/B4776360.5;abr=!ie;sz=160x600;click=http://us.ard.yahoo.com/SIG=15v...

As election season heats up, Democrats battle grim prospects

AP – FILE - In this Aug. 16, 2010 file photo, President Barack Obama and Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate, … – Sun Sep 5, 10:45 pm ET By TERENCE SAMUEL Just how bad could things get for the Democrats when voters head to the polls in November? Two years after they handed President Barack Obama a sweeping electoral victory -- and four years after turning control of Congress over to the Democrats in frustration over Bush Administration policies -- the president and his party are now the source of an even deeper frustration for a growing number of Americans.  Anger over the stalled economy, the soaring deficit and, to some, the seemingly reckless  expansion of government is boiling over throughout the country. The odds that the Democrats could lose control of one or even both houses of Congress are soaring too. That would make it more difficult for Obama to advance a legislati...
