A coldhearted clerk at a Queens bodega tried to pocket a $14 million lottery ticket when the 72-year-old jackpot winner went to check his prize, officials said Friday.

Milledge McCassell took a stack of lottery tickets to the Dynasty Deli and Grocery in Jamaica on Aug. 26 to see if any were winners, officials said.

He scanned the tickets at a self service prize checker inside the store. One of the tickets prompted the message "BIG WINNER" on the screen, and McCassell went to the clerk to find out how much he'd won.

"The clerk at the Dynasty Deli gave him a few dollars back," said New York Lottery spokesman Carolyn Hapeman. "Milledge said, 'What about the big winner?' The clerk said, 'You didn't give me a big winner ticket, I don't know what you're talking about.'"
But McCassell, a retired MTA worker, knew better. He vowed to return to the store and claim his prize.

"I knew something wasn't right so the next day, I went to another retailer I trusted and together, we called the Lottery to file a complaint," McCassell said at a press conference Friday.

Lottery officials and investigators from the state police went to Dynasty Deli to question the clerk and review electronic information from the store's machines.

Records from the machines "cast serious doubt that \[the clerk\] never received the ticket as he claimed," said Hapeman.

"All of a sudden, the deli clerk miraculously was able to find the ticket and returned it," she said.

Lottery officials gave McCassell the ticket and told him what it was worth.

He elected to take a onetime payout of $8.7 million - $5.5 million after taxes.

State Police forwarded the case to the Queens District Attorney's Office, which confirmed Friday they were investigating.
